Es la nueva catedral de Cuenca y es considerada como símbolo de la arquitectura religiosa de la ciudad y una de las mayores obras a nivel de Latinoamérica. El inicio de su construcción data 1885, en su interior resalta el pan de oro y los coloridos vitrales, el mármol utilizado fue traído de la ciudad italiana de Carrara, digno representante de la fe del pueblo cuencano y patrimonio de los ecuatorianos. La construcción de la nueva catedral de Cuenca quedo inconclusa por un error de cálculo arquitectónico, faltan dos cúpulas, las mismas que iban en la parte frontal de la iglesia. Las cúpulas están cubiertas con azulejos de Checoslovaquia y son de es estilo renacentista. Los planos de la catedral fueron elaborados por le hermano alemán Juan Bautista.La construcción de la catedral duró más de 100 años en terminarla. Su fachada es imponente y su tamaño provoca una impresión de enorme peso. Tiene capacidad para ocho mil personas, tiene 105 metros de longitud y 43.5 metros de ancho. La altura del la cúpula central es 53 metros y 12 metros de diámetro. Además posee una cripta de 96 metros de largo, 12 de ancho y 4.2 de largo, con capacidad para tres mil personas.
En el interior de la iglesia predominan en las naves laterales, los bellísimos vitrales elaborados por el artista vasco Guillermo Larrazábal. En el centro del templo, el gran baldaquino de estilo barroco y columnas salomónicas, presenta características muy similares a la Basílica de San Pedro en El Vaticano. Los vitrales de Larrazábal, que son de vidrio antiguo, soplado francés de colores de varias gamas, pintadas al horno y armados en nervadura de plomo.
En la edificación se puede apreciar elementos góticos, como son los tres grandes rosetones, las ventanas bíforas de la fachada, los torreones y los vitrales de los muros, combinando varios estilos arquitectónicos, predominando el románico. Tambien vale recalcar que esta cubierta con pan de Oro todo su altar
